VYS0039 | Try Not To Be A Dick Shall Be The Whole Of The Law - Vayse to Face with Duncan Barford
June 19th, 2024 | Season 2 | 2 hrs 1 min
duncan barford, mental health, occult experiments in the home, the baptist's head
After a 3 month break, Vayse returns for an interview with a person who inspired the podcast before it was even a podcast - writer, podcaster and psychodynamic psychotherapeutic counsellor, Duncan Barford. Duncan's book Occult Experiments in the Home was a major influence on Hine and Buckley's views on magick and mysticism but for this interview they zero in on aspects of his career as a therapist, focusing on mental health and how this can affect and be affected by the occult and occult practices: Why do so many prominent figures in magick seem to have mental health issues or addictions? Where do you draw the line between mystical experience and mental health disorder? How do you maintain a magical practice when your mental health isn't good? Is it safe to have a magical practice at all? and most importantly... what kind of deep-seated psychological damage is preventing Hine from remembering the name of Duncan's new book? VYS0019 | It's A Very, Very Mad World - Donnie Darko
April 12th, 2023 | Season 1 | 1 hr 54 mins
donnie darko, mad world, mental health, time travel, vayse
In December 2002 Hine and Buckley met at the Dukes Cinema in Lancaster, Lancashire, UK, for what become one of their most cherished movie-going experiences - to watch an independent film which had already gathered a cult following: Donnie Darko. Donnie Darko is a divisive film popular opinion swings between it being a poignant and magical modern classic to it being amateurish, film school bullshit with an inexplicably great cast (and soundtrack!!!). In this feature length episode (an entire swaggering minute longer than the run-time of the theatrical cut itself!) Hine and Buckley drill down deep into why the film still means so much to them almost 21 years later, what Richard Kelly actually intended the film to mean, why it's actually a '90s masterpiece (despite not being set, made or released in the '90s) and what the "S" in "S. Darko" might stand for... Recorded 16 March 2023.
Warning: Extreme Spoilers For Donnie Darko Follow
