VYS0064 | Things Aren't Always What They Seem In This Place - Halloween 2026: Labyrinth

October 28th, 2026  |  Season 5  |  2 hrs 12 mins

Halloween, Jim Henson, david bowie, faeries, folk horror, goblin king, goblins, jospeh campbell, labyrinth, magic, music, nature, occult, occult podcast, paranormal, sound, strange, supernatural, vayse, weird, weird fiction, weird stuff, weirdpod

Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, we have fought our way here to the season 5 of Vayse. And to open this season, as a celebration of Halloween 2026, Hine and Buckley take a deep dive into the marvellous, mysterious and mighty muppety masterpiece: Laybyrinth.

A lot of ink has been spilled in service of examining the social/psychological/sexual subtext of this 1986 comedy/fantasy tour de force but rather than try to compete for an angle in this arena, the Vayse boys go back to their childhoods, examining the movie as an urtext of imagination and the supernatural: Buckley's obsessive twice daily screenings of the film during summer holidays as a child and his desire for escape into it's world as a teenager, Hine's fascination with how the story is woven together from illusions, magic and subverted fairy tales... and how every one of the main touch points of Vayse is explicitly or implicitly set out in this exquisite 1986 masterwork (recorded 19 October 2026)

VYS0052 | Goddamn Shit-sucking Vampires - Halloween 2025: The Lost Boys - Vayse to Face with Sorcha Ní Fhlainn

October 29th, 2025  |  Season 4  |  1 hr 56 mins

1980s, Halloween, lost boys, sorcha ní fhlainn, vampires, vayse

"Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die." - Sounds exhausting. This is not how Hine and Buckley do Halloween anymore. So, instead of re-living their twenties, or the Lost Decade, as they call it, they talk to Dr Sorcha Ní Fhlainn about the greatest horror movie of the 1980s, or the Lost Boys, as they call it.

Sorcha is a film critic, a writer, an academic - a Reader in Film Studies with a specialism in American Film at Manchester Metropolitan University specialising in Gothic Studies and Horror Cinema, with a particular focus on Vampires - and an all-round legend who helps Hine and Buckley get their teeth stuck deep into Joel Schumacher's 1987 masterpiece without getting lost in the gory details (but never over-looking the Corey details).

The Lost Boys stands up well to scrutiny (well, mostly...kind of...) and Sorcha leads a discussion ranging from the transplanting of vampiric folklore from dark-ages Europe to MTV-era USA, the history of the vampire as a metaphor in literature and cinema, the way in which the Lost Boys and contemporary 1980s vampire movies, Near Dark and Fright Night contributed to queer horror, exactly what it is that makes the Lost Boys one of the greatest movies of all time... and what's the deal with the greased up, pumped up, beach-party thrusting sax-player and why is it that he's brilliant? (recorded 6 October 2025)

VYSXXXX | The Real Vayse: Halloween 2024

October 30th, 2024  |  Season 3  |  2 hrs 19 mins

Halloween, ap strange, darragh mason, douglas bachelor, joseph matheny, sequoyah kennedy, stephanie quick, vayse

Since October 2023, Vayse HQ has been regularly receiving mysterious, confusing and unsettling emails, seemingly from all over the world, all hinting towards the same impossible conclusion.

In this episode the Vayse boys launch an investigation into where these weird communications might be coming from and who might be behind them with a little help and a lot of expertise from some familiar and very welcome faces: Douglas Batchelor, Darragh Mason, Sequoyah Kennedy, Joseph Matheny, Stephanie Quick and AP Strange. The deeper they dig, the more they find themselves falling down rabbit holes within rabbit holes within rabbit holes... (Recorded October 2024)

VYS0029 | If There's Something Strange In Your Neighbourhood - Vayse to Face to Face with Field Lines Cartographer and Bob Freeman: Halloween 2023

October 30th, 2023  |  Season 2  |  1 hr 48 mins

Halloween, bob freeman, camp fire, field lines cartographer, flc, ghost stories, ghosts, occult detective, vayse

Four middle-aged men bravely join forces to confront ancient evils, spooks, spectres and ghosts - ok, so, Vayse did Ghostbusters last Halloween but instead, this year, Hine and Buckley welcome back master of the liminal soundscape, Field Lines Cartographer and the Occult Detective himself, Bob Freeman to sit around the virtual camp fire as they each tell a ghost story from their home towns.

FLC tells a tale of Warwickshire plague pits and feelings of stalking dread in the dark, Hine recounts a gruesome murder in Preston which led to bloody revenge from beyond the grave, Bob spins a classic American yarn of haunted houses in the deep, dark woods of rural Indiana and Buckley tells of the spirit of a young boy who haunts the picturesque town of Great Corby bringing those who encounter him great fortune followed by certain death.

The conversation also turns to whether ghosts are actually, really all that scary, the differences between ghost stories in the UK and the US, the nature of reality itself (of course, this is Vayse)... and digitally transported flies... (Recorded 10 October 2023)

VYS0009 | If There's Something Weird - Halloween 2022: Ghostbusters

October 31st, 2022  |  Season 1  |  1 hr 31 mins

Ghostbusters, Halloween, capitalism, lovecraft, neoliberalism, reagan

We got one! Before there was Hellier, before there was Twin Peaks there was Ghostbusters. In this special Halloween episode Hine and Buckley take a deep dive into this cherished classic - the movie that launched a thousand ghost hunting expeditions and at least one podcast about weird stuff. At the remove of 38 years and examined through the lens of Vayse, is Ghostbusters a beloved and harmless comedy blockbuster, a Lovecraftian cautionary tale, or a technicolour Reaganite super-dream? See you on the other side. Recorded 26 October 2022.
